CENTRAL OREGON MANUFACTURER ROLLS OUT NEW EQUIPMENT
FOR FIRE FIGHTING INDUSTRY

BEND, OR –The Deschutes River Manufacturing (DRM)
Rookie™ and Rookie Sidekick™ products continue to save
firefighters time and energy by alleviating the backbreaking
task of hand rolling fire hoses.
In response to requests from wild land fire agencies
and tested by firefighters on the job, and developed
by an experienced machinist, the Rookie is a motorized,
portable, easy to operate and compact hose roller. It
fits in the back of a pickup truck and rolls hundred-foot
sections of hose in less than 30 seconds. The OSHA inspected
Rookie is available in single or double mandrel units
with either a 1.5HP electric motor or 5.5HP Honda engine
and significantly reduces labor and saves time both
in the field and at the station.
The Rookie SideKick is a smaller, ultra-portable version
of the Rookie weighing less than 150 pounds. Requested
by the U.S. Forest Service for its lightweight, it mounts
on any vehicle receiver hitch or rack of an ATV. It
is available in three models, a 110-volt, the equipment
of choice for municipal fire stations, a 12-volt and
a Honda gas engine with an optional portable stand.
The Rookie SideKick’s versatility means it’s
easy to take into remote areas and direct to the fire
line so that fire crews can use their energy to fight
the fire, rather than rolling the hoses. Both the Rookie
and the Rookie SideKick are powder coated and have a
one-year warranty.
In addition to the Rookie and the Rookie SideKick, DRM
is currently developing a 5” Large Diameter Hose
roller that should be in production and available by
Summer 2005.
Deschutes River Manufacturing is a privately owned company
built by David Johnston, a former millwright responsible
for thoroughly testing and properly storing mill fire
hoses. At the request of the U.S. Forest Service, Johnston
utilized his years of machinist experience to streamline
and automate the hose rolling process. In true entrepreneurial
spirit, David researched and developed this time saving
equipment and discovered a widespread need, encompassing
many industries.
The Rookie is available through the GSA contract system.
