CENTRAL OREGON MANUFACTURER INTRODUCES
NEW 5” LARGE DIAMETER HOSE ROLLER
Date: April 22, 2005
BEND, OR – Deschutes River Manufacturing’s
(DRM) RookieTM and Rookie SidekickTM products continue
to save firefighters time and energy by alleviating the
backbreaking task of hand rolling fire hoses.
Initially developed by an experienced machinist in response
to requests from wildland agencies and tested by firefighters
throughout the country, the Rookie and Rookie Sidekick
are highly regarded throughout the firefighting industry.
Both models are compact, motorized, portable and easy
to operate. The OSHA-inspected Rookie is available through
the GSA system and can be ordered in single or double
mandrel units with either a 1.5HP electric motor or 5.5HP
Honda gas engine and significantly reduces labor and saves
time both in the field and at the station. The Rookie
Sidekick is a smaller, ultra-portable version of the Rookie
weighing less than 150 pounds and developed to answer
the need for remote access in the field for wildland fire
crews.
Recent requests from industrial and municipal fire departments
have prompted the development of the new Rookie Sidekick
LDHTM. Specifically constructed to handle 5” large
diameter fire hose, it is also portable and mounts on
any vehicle receiver hitch. Powered by a 3HP Honda gas
engine, the Rookie Sidekick LDH’s strength saves
manpower and energy on the scene or at the station. An
optional portable stand is available for easy transport
of the Sidekick.
Currently in development is an optional re-loading rack
that will transform the portable stand into a hose handling
system that allows effortless transport of rolled hoses
and reduces the manpower needed to re-load hose back onto
the engine. Watch for it soon or call for further information.
Deschutes River Manufacturing is a privately owned company
built by David Johnston, a machinist/millwright previously
responsible for thoroughly testing and properly storing
mill fire hoses. At the request of the U.S. Forest Service,
Johnston utilized his years of machinist experience to
streamline and automate the hose rolling process. In true
entrepreneurial spirit, David researched and developed
this time saving equipment and discovered a widespread
need, encompassing many industries.
